If the church is going to use the Bible to decide whether divorce is legitimate in certain cases and whether divorced couples have the right to remarry with the approval and blessing of God’s people, then the Bible must be studied without prejudice toward a particular answer. The author examines the relevant passages in both the Old and New Testaments so that his readers can consider the many issues and interpretations that arise in trying to establish a consistently biblical position. As a result, readers can see more clearly and accept more firmly the truth of Scripture. The book succeeds at being exactly what the author wanted it to be: "a comprehensive, lucid, accurate study presented in a readable and practical style. . . ." It is a valuable resource for the pastor, counselor, church leader, and others who are struggling to understand and apply scriptural principles to the problems of divorce and remarriage.

This book makes sense and is probably pretty good for the average marriage where there's a lot of bitterness, resentment, unforgiveness, etc., accumulated over the years. To that end, if you're in a typical unhappy marriage and truly trying to restore things, I would strongly recommend the book: "Total Forgiveness" by RT Kendall. It's not only the best book on forgiveness I've ever read, but one of the best books I've ever read period. The book "Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible" here though doesn't really deal with the more serious issues, such as where abuse (emotional and physical) or cases where PTSD or nervous breakdowns have occurred from the actions of your spouse come into play. Human beings are capable of doing unbelievable things to one another. While we are called to forgive and love each other, sometimes it's necessary to remove yourself from an abusive or otherwise extremely bad situation. For more serious issues, I would recommend the book: "Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible: The Social and Literary Context" by David Instone-Brewer. Even if you do read and apply the book "Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible", I would still recommend reading these two other books I've recommended here as they've helped me tremendously. As for "Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible", it's a decent book that goes over concepts that as Christians we should already be familiar with--sometimes we need reminders like this and in this case it's good to read this book. Like I said, if you're in a typical, unhappy marriage, it'll probably be helpful to you.
this book is the best guide available for ministers that need to counsel people who have been divorced and wish to remarry. The authors approach is grounded totally within scripture and good exegetics thereof. There are problems today with some in the church that while they accept divorce, will not marry those who have been divorced. And such is my case where my first marriage of 5 years ended in divorce (I was left with 2 pre-school age children and was a single parent for 6 years) but my second marriage lasted over 35 years.I now wish to remarry but the one I proposed to had a problem with her church minister who would refuse to marry someone that has been divorced regardless of the reason. She read the book and is convinced that re-marriage is permissible especially for the innocent party. In our church, if there is a woman with children whose husband left her, we would tell her to go and sin no more and then find her a husband to care for her and her children. Howbeit there are those who would condemn a divorced person and tell them their needs cannot be met, either for themselves or for their children.
Takes a difficult topic and for the most part says that personal opinion doesn’t matter but here is what the Bible says. That I like. What I don’t like is that remarriage (enough of an issue to own 1/3 the title) is only given 2 brief chapters towards the end. The title and introductory chapters make it seem that it will be discussed on full but it appears to just be tacked on at the end.
The book is thorough in looking at the subject of divorce and remarriage throughout the Bible.
While everyone knows that God "hates divorce"... very few if any can say "why" using Scripture. And then... even fewer know how, as individuals, we should Scripturally approach separation, divorce, remarriage, etc...Possibly worse yet, the church and its leadership know little or nothing about Biblical answers to the problems we are facing... and if they do know... they are eerily SILENT?!?Jay E. Adams has written a book that should be read by EVERY Christian contemplating marriage... and every married person. But it is a MUST READ for every church leader who faces Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in their congregation on a regular basis.Without BIBLICAL answers... we are doomed to continue in this downward spiral of divorce, ignorance, and sin. This book provides ANSWERS and SOLUTIONS!
In a day of "moral relativism," Jay Adam's classic book continues to stand for uncompromising Biblical theology andChristian values, all balanced with the grace and love of a biblical counselor with a pastor's heart.Pastor Larry Nelson
Jay Adams draws together the Biblical evidence, more than most books on this topic consider, to reach conclusions that wind up being both faithful and practical. It's short, readable, and positive, in spite of the difficult and controversial topic.Too many churches have a traditional treatment in which divorce is considered a forbidden action, but in practice they either wind up ignoring all divorces, or condemning both parties. This short book doesn't bring in extrabiblical evidence like that considered by Instone-Brewer, and expanding the discussion to include that would be quite fruitful, since the conclusions are a little different (Instone-Brewer recognizes more grounds than Adams).
If your interested in Biblical truth, and what to understand what the Scriptures teach about Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage, it's just what you were looking for.
